José Manuel Resende is a Sociologist and a Full Professor at Universidade de Évora, as well as a Researcher at CICS.NOVA. He is Collaborator at the Permanent Observatory of Youth–ICS/UL, as well as at the Post-Graduation Program on Political Sociology of UENF/RJ/Brazil. He is also an external consultant at INCT/InEAC of UFF/Niterói/RJ/Brazil and at Vladimir Herzog Institute, São Paulo/Brazil and works together with Laurent Thévenot (Georg Simmel centre of EHESS), Marc Breviglieri (HETS, Genève, Switzerland), Luca Pattaroni (EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland).


Research Interests:

Sociological Theories. Pragmatic Sociology. Sociology of the Public. Problems. Phenomenological and Hermeneutical Sociology. Sociology of the Common Places in the Plural.


Main Projects:

  • 2017- : Scientific coordinator of the project “Between School and Neighborhood: strangeness, estrangement and hospitality”, conceived and developed within the sabbatical plan authorized by the Scientific Council of the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities. This project is an unfolding of the project “Between the indifference of some and the intrusion others: tensions, dilemmas and misunderstandings in the parent-teacher relationship” submitted to funding under the last call opened by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) with the acronym BET_IND_INT_P;
  • 2009-2012: Scientific coordInator of the project “Gender, Inequality and Humiliation: feelings of injustice in schools” (PIHM / GC / 0085/2008), approved in October 2008’s call promoted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the Commission for Citizenship and Equality of Gender. This project was completed in April 2012;
  • 2004-2007: Within the Permanent Observatory of Schools integrated in the activities of the Associated Laboratory at the Institute of Social Sciences of Universidade de Lisboa and in the framework of the Research Program “The meanings that School does: Teachers, students and families”, coordinated by Maria Manuel Vieira, is the scientific coordinator of the research project entitled “Political Socialization of Students of Public Secondary Education in Portugal: Normative Frameworks, Devices and Schemes of Action”. This last project was carried out under a post-doctorate grant awarded by FCT - SFRH/BPD/20953/2004 – and with semester trips (in the second semesters of the academic years of 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2006/07) to France to work with French research teams on the same subject, with scientific co-ordination by Professor Jean-Louis Derouet in 2005 and 2006, and in 2007 under the responsibility of Professor Patrick Rayou;
  • 2004-2006: Project approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) entitled “The place of disease, body and suffering in the representation of patient identity forms” (PSIDA/SOC/49712/2003). The research was carried out over a period of two years, from July 2004 to July 2006. The work was completed in December 2006 with the submission of the final report to the institution that financed the research (FCT and CNLCS);
  • 2004: Project concerning the humanization of health care “Breast cancer and the suffering of sick women: from the policies of screening and reception to medical judgment: judgement and regimes of action”, coordinated by José Manuel Resende and integrated in the FCSH (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation).
