Manuel Carlos Silva holds a PhD cum laude in Social, Cultural and Political Sciences by the University of Amsterdam. He was Director of CICS-UMinho between 2002 and 2014 and President of the Portuguese Sociological Association between 2010 and 2012. He is Retired Full Professor (University of Minho) and Integrated Member of CICS.NOVA. He was awarded with the Prize Sedas Nunes with the work "Resistance and Adaptation. Constraints and peasant strategies in the Northwest of Portugal" (Porto: Afrontamento, 1998) and has (co)published on the rural-urban, development and social inequalities (class, ethnical and gender).

Main Projects:

  • 2016 - 2019 – Coordinator and responsible researcher of the Project Modos de vida e formas de habitar: Ilhas e Bairros Populares no Porto e em Braga (Ways of Life and Modes of Inhabiting: Social Housing in Poor Neighborhoods in Oporto and Braga), University of Minho, PTDC/ IVC-SOC/ 4243/ 2014. Evaluated as Excelent and sponsored by FCT- Foundation for Science and Technology (PTD/IVC-SOC/4243/2014). Beginning: August 2016 (ongoing).
  • 2007 - 2011 – Coordinator and responsible researcher of the Project Desigualdades de género no trabalho e na vida privada: Entre leis e práticas sociais (Gender (In)equalities in Work and Private Life: the gap between norms and social practices), University of Minho, PTDC/SDE/72257/2006. Evaluated as Very Good and sponsored by FCT- Foundation for the Science and Technology (finished in June 2011).
  • 2002 - 2003 – Coordinator and responsible researcher of Project Toxicodependência em contexto famalicence: para além do duplo olhar de ´insiders´ and ´outsiders´ (Drugs adiction: insiders and Outsiders). Proponents: University of Minho and Municipality of Famalicão (finished in 2003; with a second phase 2004-2007): Programa de prevenção nas escolas (Drugs´prevention program, implemented in Schools of Famalicão (with Zara Coelho and Sonia Azevedo).
  • 2001 - 2005 – Co-coordinator and researcher (in University of Minho) of the project "Prostituição feminina em regiões de fronteira (Female Prostitution in Portuguese Border Areas (SAPIENS/99, POCTI/36472/SOC). Evaluated as Excellent and sponsored by FCT- Foundation for the Science and Technology, with partnership of Johana Schouten (UBI University) and under coordination of Manuela Ribeiro (UTAD University) (finished in January 2005).
  • 2001 – 2006 – Coordinator and responsible of the Project Relações Interétnicas: do racismo e da xenophobia ao multiculturalismo. Um estudo de minorias étnicas de origem africana e etnia cigana (From Racism and Xenophobia to Multiculturalism: a Study of Ethnical Minorities of African origin and Gypsies), approved as Very Good, sponsored by FCT- Foundation for the Science and Technology (POCTI SOC/103/96) (finished in December 2006).
