Current policy addressing drugs varies considerable across the United States. All drugs remain illegal federally, however the trend among states is to legalize marijuana for medical use, and in many cases such as Colorado, Washington, and California, for recreational use as well. Although the Obama administration had a policy of noninterference with marijuana state laws, the Trump administration recinded that policy and has declared their plan to prosecute federal marijuana cases in all 50 states.
Approaches to treating substance use disorders in the United States continue to vary greatly, Some treatment programs are rooted in 12 step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous and the Minnesota Model, however an increasing trend of research-informed models such as Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment, and Community Reinforcement and Family Training are gaining favor.
I have worked in the field of Addiction Treatment for over 20 years and will share what I have learned in the field over that time as well as my current research interests in Social Justice and Treating Substance Use Disorders.
