Maria Maia is, since 2016, a researcher at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in Germany. With a background in health sciences, she has a Ph.D on Technology Assessment (2020) by Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UN), with a focus on decision-making process for the acquisition of medical devices, a Master’s in Health Policy Administration and Management of Health Services (2005) by Universidade de Évora (UE) and Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa (ESTeSL) and a Licentiate in Radiology (2002) by Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa (ESTeSL).

Maria Maia’s main research interests are methods of technology assessment in health, concepts and practices of responsible research and innovation (RRI), and citizen and stakeholders’ perspectives on new technologies.

Her editorial activities include the guest editing of a special issue on special Issue on "Technology Assessment, Responsible Research and Innovation, Sustainability Research: Conceptual Demands and Methodological Approaches for Societal Transformations” in the Journal Sustainability and in a former one on assistive technologies for people with disabilities in the journal Societies. Maria Maia participation in projects include the completed EU H2020 project PRISMA in which she had a key role in the stakeholder engagement activities and coordination of KIT-ITAS work. Besides collaborating in several projects, she coordinates the ITAS-KIT work (as subcontract) in the projects KI-SIGS (AI - Space for Intelligent Health Systems) and CoCoAI (Cooperative and communicating AI methods for medical image-guided diagnostics).

Maria Maia is an elected board member of the International Society for the Studies of New and Emerging Technologies (S.NET) and founding member of the Observatory of Technology Assessment and of the Network Studies Group on Technology Assessment, both in Portugal. She is an editorial board member of the Journal of Responsible Technology and a Topics Board member at the Journal Societies.
